VentilationThe branching structures in the lung allow inspired gas to be distributed to tissue membranes that have a combined surface area approximately the size of a tennis court. If one of the branches is obstructed due to blockage, restriction, or collapse, the subsequent branches will not be ventilated as we breathe. This problem is very difficult to depict using normal imaging techniques because the dependent tissues appear normal. MagniXene™ enables a clear image of the ventilated regions of the lung. Ventilation defects can be observed with each breath. The effectiveness of therapeutic interventions such as a bronchodilator can be immediately evaluated. Ventilation defects can occur due to cystic fibrosis or asthma attacks in younger patients, or due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease later in life. MagniXene™ offers the first commercially viable imaging diagnostic for evaluating this common condition. |
